Setting up the shop
Hi - I'm Lulla and I live in Broadstairs. I have studied Art in Brighton, ran my own restaurant in Canterbury, and then completed a degree and PGCE in Canterbury.
But ... I was always passionate about starting my own local gift shop, where I could indulge in some art work myself. I particularly wanted to stock up with beautiful products which were excellent quality, colourful and pleasing to the eye. It was also really important for me to know they were fairly traded, ethically produced or artisan.
This combination proved challenging to meet, and I spent several months researching and talking to suppliers, both home and abroad. I now sell hand crafted ceramics from Poland, traditional wooden toys from Prague, jewellery from India and Mexico, handmade raffia baskets by artisans in Madagascar, crafts from Saint Petersburg, naturally scented candles, oils, creams, soaps and bath bombs. I have also sourced unique and artistic greetings cards.
Storing products at home in preparation for the shop opening, I noticed my bath bomb stock had depleted rapidly. I was puzzled - I knew I had tried a couple myself and given one or two to my granddaughters to test, but I had accounted for those. Then, one evening, a lovely aroma wafted from the bathroom door. Mystery solved - my other half, who had never before showed an interest, was having a deliciously scented bath. Well at least he had used a "man" bath bomb this time!
Please drop into the shop, I'd love to see you
